For many years, I thought I had the worst insomnia. Each night I would lie awake in my bed until 3 or 4 in the morning, and then be a zombie the whole next day. In 2015 I finally discovered what was keeping me up ALL night... it was COCONUT OIL!!! It really just kind of came to me one day. Coconut oil is a great source of lauric acid, has a gazillion health benefits, and it gives you tons of energy. (I don't love it for the skin however, but that's another article you can read HERE. ) I'd been using coconut oil in desserts, chips, smoothies and many food items, often later at night.
Finally after 8 years of thinking I had super bad hormonal issues, insomnia, and anxiety - I got to the root issue. Once I took out coconut oil at 6-7 pm I started sleeping like a baby. Sometimes I'll accidentally have it and it will keep me up for a while. If I have a little bit it won't affect me. But often times I spit it out, because I love to sleep. Now, I don't have it after 5-7 pm generally, but it may be different for you.
If you are having a hard time sleeping, I suggest cutting this out for 3-4 weeks to see if it will help you. I do love coconut oil during the day (it's great with scrambled eggs) but after 5 pm, I have to tone it down. May I suggest Macadamia nut oil to cook with at night. It has a high heat threshold and won't go rancid at high temperatures. I generally use butter or ghee (clarified butter) as well in desserts or to cook with. Oh mye, the benefits of Coconut Butter are so good even in comparison to Coconut Oil, I discovered in Research today – thought I would add it to a nightime routine with Raw Honey that helps me sleep. Aparently the Coconut Butter does not if you ingest it after 6.30pm. What an interesting mix! Should be interesting to see if the Raw Honey helps me sleep or the Coconut Butter keeps me awake – I remember now, someone saying it energizes up to 6 hours if you take it early in the day, so probably better in a morning routine, hey? You can actually do that, the benefits are pretty good!
Yes! Causes insomnia for me and my dad even if we have it in the morning. Thanks for letting people know.
I just started using coconut oil in bullet proof coffee associated with a paleo diet I just began. Yes, it’s keeping me up at night, even 12 hours after I have it. It’s 1:22 am and I’m WIDE AWAKE!! Thanks for your article, now I know I’m not nutz.
I appreciate this coconut oil idea! I wish I did take it nightly so I could now stop and sleep better! I did change to no ginger or kombucha or meals after 5:30 and these things have definitely helped me. A little marzipan always helps though……lol!
I have been using coconut oil a while and after several months I started getting bright read and breaking out in not normal areas. I kept lathering it on trying to “heal” my skin. I’m tossing it tonight and stocking up on salt scrubs! My Lavender scrub ran out a few weeks ago and I think that’s why it has gotten so bad lately. Thank you for sharing your expertise with us!
